Meet Nick Stebbins, a veteran whose transition from the military to IT showcases the invaluable client management skills acquired through diverse experiences. Initially trained as an M1 Abrams tanker at Fort Knox in Kentucky, Nick was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. During his service, he immersed himself in learning Dari, the official language of Afghanistan, and completed an extensive 165-hour language training program. Nick’s exceptional communication skills took center stage when he became a squad’s designated linguist: “I was involved in high-level meetings with village elders,” he reminisces, “ensuring clear and accurate communication between our commander and the local community.”
After his military service, Nick explored electrical sales before finding his niche in IT. “I went to Centric Training in Kansas City and trained on being a systems engineer in IT.” It was at the technical school’s job fair where he found IT Solutions and was immediately drawn to the company culture. Recalling his first impression, Nick said, “One of the other guys had a full sleeve of tattoos, and I thought, that’s where I want to go. I was hired on the spot.”
His initial role on the ITS helpdesk highlighted his talent for translating technical terminology and managing different clients. “In tough discussions, it’s crucial to engage with the right individuals at the appropriate level of authority. The military helped me realize that’s applicable everywhere,” he reflects. Within three years, Nick was promoted to a pivotal role as a Client Services Coordinator during a team-building hike in Colorado.
This new position would be instrumental in launching ITS’ Kansas City Client Success Team. Reflecting on the transition, Nick shared, “One of the reasons I was chosen to help establish the Client Success Team was my ability to communicate effectively with our clients.” His extensive experience on the helpdesk, troubleshooting tickets, and resolving server issues proved invaluable. “Because of my hands-on experience,” Nick explained, “I had built strong relationships with many of our client contacts, which laid a solid foundation for success in the client success world.”
Nick has worked as a Strategic Advisor in Kansas City for the past six months, ensuring clients receive comprehensive support. His client success strategy boils down to three things: overcommunication, on-site presence, and personalized phone calls. “The feeling you get out of personalizing interactions with a phone call can go a long way,” he emphasized.
With nine years of experience and a recent promotion to Strategic Advisor for the Kansas City region, Nick is excited to continue growing in his role, “It feels like a natural progression,” he shared.
Nick resides in Kansas City, Missouri, with his family and their four-year-old rescue Pitbull, Rain. Outside of work, he enjoys fishing, date nights at the cinema with his wife, and playing video games with his son, Bentley.
